Cugó Gran Macina
Where History meets Contemporary Luxury
ABOUT THE HOTEL
The Macina, a 16th century, Maltese landmark, meets modern interior design. The hotel offers 21 spacious suites from 40 to 130 m², with high vaulted ceilings, hand-picked designer pieces and an uninterrupted view of the marina. The exclusive pool on the roof of the building promises wellness and relaxation in a sublime atmosphere above the city’s roof tops. Relax back into one of our loungers and allow your gaze to roam across the Mediterranean setting. Alternatively, why not rent our roof terrace for your event. This can accommodate up to 600 guests, providing them with breathtaking luxury and a view across to the Maltese capital of Valletta. The Cugó Gran Macina will make your stay an unforgettable experience.
Atelier Voyage was there and states:
“Located in the heart of the architecturally rich Three Cities, this property located in the natural & historical Grand Harbour, one of the most beautiful marinas seen worldwide… offers the best window to Malta! A must-see.”
A Hotel, A Landmark
Constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1554, the Macina formed part of a bastion which was to protect Senglea from invaders over the centuries to come and was an important landmark in the city. At the start of the 16th century, an enormous wooden construction – the “Macina” – was added to the building. This was a sheer crane able to lift heavy loads or entire parts of sailing ships onto land. From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, the Maltese Labour Party used the building as their headquarters. In 2018, the Cugo Gran Macina opened its doors – and with it a landmark had been brought back to life.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
A full transformation from an historical landmark structure to an international retreat, architect Edwin Mintoff perfectly married expansive views with discreet privacy. The hotel’s large communal spaces and high vaulted ceilings allow for ample natural light to play off the property’s minimalistic, inviting design. For a symbiotic mix of Old World and New, the design gurus at Daaa Haus transformed the hotel’s historical aspect through an abundant and creative use of unique lighting, tufted wool rugs, Scandinavian pieces, and bespoke Italian sofas and beds. The elegant design also utilizes a wealth of rich materials, such as lacquered raw steel, lava stone, limed oak, Carrara marble, slate, Maltese hard stone, and custom tinted glass.
ROOFTOP POOL & FITNESS
The extraordinary rooftop pool offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the historic cities of Cospicua and Vittoriosa. For your convenience, you will receive umbrellas and sunbeds, so you can enjoy the fresh water during the summer months. Also, pre-book your wellness treatments at anytime. Moreover, endless opportunities for jogging, swimming, sailing and other sports in the immediated vicinity of the Hotel Cugó Gran Macina.
RESTAURANT & BAR
The perfect place to meet
Drawing on this history, the gastronomical concept is a take on the islands’ succession of powers with a modern representation of traditional Mediterranean culinary influences that date back to the Phoenician times. Like the Maltese language itself, the menu is a taste of history derived from the island’s Mediterranean-Semitic roots, with a contemporary twist, created using only the finest local, seasonal produce.
