HISTORY
A Hotel, A Landmark

Constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1554, the Macina formed part of a bastion which was to protect Senglea from invaders over the centuries to come and was an important landmark in the city. At the start of the 16th century, an enormous wooden construction – the “Macina” – was added to the building. This was a sheer crane able to lift heavy loads or entire parts of sailing ships onto land. From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, the Maltese Labour Party used the building as their headquarters. In 2018, the Cugo Gran Macina opened its doors – and with it a landmark had been brought back to life.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Full Transformation

A full transformation from an historical landmark structure to an international retreat, architect Edwin Mintoff perfectly married expansive views with discreet privacy. The hotel’s large communal spaces and high vaulted ceilings allow for ample natural light to play off the property’s minimalistic, inviting design. For a symbiotic mix of Old World and New, the design gurus at Daaa Haus transformed the hotel’s historical aspect through an abundant and creative use of unique lighting, tufted wool rugs, Scandinavian pieces, and bespoke Italian sofas and beds. The elegant design also utilizes a wealth of rich materials, such as lacquered raw steel, lava stone, limed oak, Carrara marble, slate, Maltese hard stone, and custom tinted glass.
